| About Marty Elkin |
|
Marty was diagnosed with brain cancer in late 1999. He battled this aggressive and debilitating disease with the same passion that he applied to the rest of his life. To say that he maintained a positive attitude and showed courage would be an understatement. Throughout his life, Marty was passionate and fiercely devoted to the issues and people important to him. The painting to the right provides a poignant reminder not only of his long, dedicated career in the coffee industry, but of the obsession and care that he applied to many other areas of his life—namely, his commitment to providing a good life for his family, an appreciation of art, travel, and good food, and, as many of you might remember, a love of quality conversation and debate. Marty was also a devoted philanthropist, donating his time and resources to numerous causes. Losing Marty to brain cancer was a tremendous loss for his family, his community, and numerous institutions. Diagnosed in over 200,000 people in the United States each year, brain tumors are the leading cause of solid tumor cancer death in children under the age of 20, now surpassing leukemia. They are the second-leading cause of cancer death in male adults ages 20 to 29, and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in female adults ages 20 to 39. Marty donated significant funds to the Brain Tumor Society and brain tumor cancer research. With this in mind, I invite you to make a donation in his name to further this legacy. Every donation makes a difference and Marty would be honored by your participation. Our best to you, The Elkin Family |
